Cornerstone Kids Fall session in kickin’ off on Wednesday, August 22nd from 6pm to 7:30pm. Join us as we grow in our faith and love for Jesus! We will be learning why God gives us rules, how we have opportunities to offer our gifts and talents, and that serving God can mean doing the opposite of everyone else. This is a great time of education as the children explore the bible and look for answers to the questions they might have. There minds and hearts are transformed as they learn just how much Jesus loves us, how He wants us to live, and what it means to serve and love others like Jesus does. One Wednesday of every month we’ll be working on a care and nurture project as we learn about the needs of those around us and what we can do to help. Call the church office at 239-354-9160 to register. Let’s Grow-Proclaim-Serve………together!

Cornerstone Kids have been following Rev. Roy’s teachings with their own lessons at their level and their understanding and depth have been amazing. This past Sunday they put love into action as they prayed for each other, helped one another, and talked about ways they could spread God’s love at home, at school, and everywhere. They got started right away! They learned that God loves us so much. He fills us with his love and it overflows onto others. What an amazing God we serve!

Be sure to join us as this coming Sunday as we learn that God created everyone and we all brothers and sisters. We are to accept all people and celebrate our differences. God wants us to care, share, and love!

Also, Cherub Choir (children 5 and under) will be singing on Mother’s Day at 10:15am. You won’t want to miss it. See you there!

When ever I hear the phrase “More Than Words” I cannot help but think of the band “Extreme”. Their late 80′s hit with catchy hooks is an ear worm and once you start singing it you just can’t seem to stop. This Sunday we will step outside the Pop hit of the 80′s and take time to consider what it means for followers of Christ to Become Resurrection – More Than Words.

Words are powerful and can impact lives. Words can be offered in love and hate. Words can encourage or tear down. Words are a major part of our lives and what we say and how we use words does make a difference. For Christians, words might not be enough. To speak the truth in love means to live the truth through our lives without the need of words. If we say we love our brothers and sisters but do not offer ourselves for our brothers and sisters then the words are empty and meaningless. If we say we believe in the power of resurrection and truly believe that Jesus is alive then how do we embody that each and every day and move beyond simple slogans or sayings? If, through Christ, we become resurrection with him shouldn’t our lives reflect this victory beyond words?

In many monastic communities vows of silence are often taken to emphasize the need for action over words. If one spends the day at a monastery a person quickly finds out how dependent we are on words. As the day progresses, those participating begin to find new ways to communicate. Serving other, handshakes and hugs, listening to others, cooking a meal together, spending a moment in the midst of God’s beautiful creation are all means of reconnecting our lives with action and practice apart from words. One of the beautiful things about the human creation is that we are not limited in how we communicate. Unfortunately, to many times, our words have not been followed by our actions. The world has heard plenty about who Jesus is, what Jesus can do and how Jesus lived – isn’t it time we moved beyond words and showed the world Jesus through our lives? Isn’t it time we become resurrection for the world?

MORE THAN WORDS – this Sunday

Grace & Peace

Rev. Roy Terry

Spring break is behind us. FCAT’s are nothing but a memory now. We have just returned from our annual trip to the Acquire the Fire Youth Conference, and it was an experience like no other! This year’s topic of study was “Normal’s Not Enough” Illustrating through music, worship, drama, and dynamic youth communicators, ways in which they can live the lives laid out for them in Christ and empowering youth through The Spirit to take a stand for what is true. Let’s face it, the world’s view of what is “good” or “okay” isn’t always what is best for us. Our youth are on the front lines of this tension, and it is when they stand strong together that these forces can be defeated. Stand together they did! They spent 27hrs. with 7000 of their peers lifting up the name of Jesus, and surrendering themselves and the troubles they have been carrying with them. It was AWESOME to be in the presence of the Holy Spirit in that context!

So now what? We will be exploring together for the next couple of weeks what we can do back on our homefront to apply what we have learned and experienced at ATF. They will be encouraged to embrace the change and freedom that has been brought forth in their lives, and continue to carry that fire with them throughout the year and in every place they go. For we know that The Spirit is with us wherever we go, and will comfort, empower, and guide us in times when we face the opposition of worldly views and temptations.

Allow me to close by saying that our youth are truly a blessing to us all. I cannot put into words how great it is to be surrounded by young people that really get it. They aren’t just here to be a “youth group”, but rather to be a “youth ministry”, comprised of God’s own children. I am amazed and sit in anticipation to see the way these youth will bring change to the world they live in by allowing the light and love of Christ to shine brightly through them.

Fear is a powerful force, and as much as we would like to believe we can live without fear, it is constantly creeping around the corner. Fear manifests itself in many ways and while we typically associate the feelings of fear with horrific events, most of the time fear comes through common life anxieties, stresses and worries. What we are afraid of can tell us a lot about who we are and what priorities we have placed on our lives. Most of the time our fears are exactly that, “our fears”! We generate potential outcomes in our minds and stir the pot of anxiety as we anticipate outcomes which have not even been born into reality. Nine times out of ten what we thought might happen never does.

While fear might be a part of our natural existence we cannot pretend that we never fear. One of the great struggles I believe we find in the Christian faith is the teaching that fear is a sign of weakness or that “true” Christians should never be bound in fear. OK, I agree that fear can be binding and that our faith in Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit can liberate us from our fears but to pretend that we never have fears – well that just isn’t reality. So what do we do with the powerful force of fear? Are we less Christian if we have fears? Or, does our faith invite us to be honest with our fears and confront them?

This Sunday (April 22nd) we will be talking about fear in light of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Maybe the resurrection isn’t simply the end of fear as much as a new opportunity to be honest about the fears we have and confront them in light of the new creation offered through Christ. Becoming resurrection invites us to be honest about those things in our lives that trouble us the most. Through being honest about our doubt and fear just maybe we might experience the liberating life that resurrection is! This liberation and honesty moves us away from viewing resurrection as simply an event which takes care of our future with God – but invites is to live in God’s future now!
